Why?
I know how easy it is to move through a city on auto pilot. I’m as guilty as anyone of reading the newspaper on my phone on the bus, instead of looking at the world around me. I’ve definitely had days where I’ve been so immersed in my own thoughts that I can’t remember the details of my journey home. And I confess to have had some close encounters with lampposts whilst walking and reading… This tends to happened in the places where I live. When I’m in tourist mode, holiday or travelling to new places, I notice so much more.
Life is short. It’s too easy to fall down the rabbit hole of social media, or an always-on mobile phone. I am convinced that it’s worth noticing where we are, what is around us, and what that means for us.
Ways to Walk is my solution to the “living on autopilot” problem. It’s a rejection of zombification, and an invitation to explore the spaces we think we know well, but that, in fact, are almost entirely unexamined.
I hope you will accept the invitation.
