A framework for walking change into being

senstoryscapes is the framework that underpins everything we do.

Developed by Suzanne Whitby as part of her doctoral research, it’s a seven-part approach for designing experiences that are immersive, embodied, and reflective, helping people connect more deeply with place, time, and one another through the senses.

The method combines sensory engagement, storytelling, and movement, anchored in place, to create experiences that slow us down, awaken curiosity, and open space for reflection and change.

Every walk, walkshop, and installation we create follows this rhythm, from noticing, to connecting, to returning.

The seven parts of senstoryscapes

Each step represents a different way of engaging with the world around us:

  • Grounding: arriving, slowing down, and connecting with place and body.
  • Sensing: opening the senses to what is present and often overlooked.
  • Storying: noticing and sharing the stories that emerge.
  • Wayfinding: exploring with awareness and curiosity.
  • Creating: making meaning, artefacts, or actions from experience.
  • Choosing: reflecting and deciding what matters or where to go next.
  • Returning: integrating what’s been learned or felt, and closing the circle.

Why it matters

senstoryscapes transforms walking into a tool for connection and imagination.
It invites participants to see familiar places with new eyes, to experience complexity through the senses, and to leave with something subtle but lasting: a shift in awareness, perspective, or possibility.

Whether a 90-minute sensory walk or a day-long Walk the Futures workshop, everything we design is grounded in this framework.

Learning and sharing the practice

We occasionally offer facilitator training in the senstoryscapes method for practitioners, educators, artists, and facilitators who wish to design their own immersive, place-based experiences.

If you’d like to learn more, contact us directly, or add your name to the form below, and we’ll let you know when the next training is planned.
